A Wonderful Pair of Charles I Carved Figures

Possibly of puritan origin, the figures are carved in the “round”, and wear pleated and folded gowns. The detail in the faces and hair is quite exceptional; the male, perhaps a preacher, has a kind but serious expression, whilst the lady has a very gentle look, her face beneath long curling hair.

The carver had undoubted skills in portraying faces, hair and clothing, but note that both figures have extraordinarily large hands – quite out of proportion.

Well patinated carved boxwood, with the original polychrome in the “low” or recessed parts of the carving.

English, circa 1630-40.

Height 8.75 inches.
